MOTÖRHEAD

Motörhead  are an English rock band formed in June 1975 by bassist, singer, and songwriter Lemmy, who has remained the sole constant member.  The band are often considered a precursor to, or one of the earliest members of, the New Wave of British Heavy Metal, which re-energized heavy metal in the late 1970’s and early 1980’s.  Despite this, Lemmy has always dubbed their music as simply “rock and roll”.  Usually a power trio, the albums Overkill, Bomber, Ace of Spades, and particularly No Sleep ’til Hammersmith, cemented Motörhead’s reputation as a top-tier rock band.  As of 2012, Motörhead have sold more than 15 million albums worldwide.  The name “Motörhead” is a reference to users of the drug amphetamine.  (More from Wikipedia)

As Andy Colquhoun put it, all of the real drumming on Pick up the Phone, America! (except for “Runnin’ Outta Road”) was handled by Phil “Philthy Animal” Taylor, the long-time drummer for the hard rock band Motörhead.

That is not how everyone does it though, and a lot of people apparently like that sort of thing, since they are everywhere on the Internet.  The most prominent post on Phil and the Frantics is a really snide piece by Mark Prindle from www.markprindle.com entitled “Frantically Ripping Off Everybody They Can”.  The article names their front man Phil “Philthy Animal” Kelsey.  (“Philthy Animal” is a real person by the way; that is the nickname of Phil Taylorthe longtime drummer for the British hard rock band Motörhead that also features Lemmy).

Sam Gopal formed a new line-up known simply as Sam Gopal that included as vocalist and guitarist Ian Willis, better known as Lemmy; this reorganized band released one album, Escalator in 1968.  Lemmy later played bass guitar for Hawkwind and, in 1975, founded the pounding British heavy metal band called Motörhead
