Ian Willis

IAN WILLIS

Ian Fraser Kilmister  (24 December 1945 – 28 December 2015), known as Lemmy, was an English musician, singer and songwriter who founded and fronted the rock band Motörhead. His music was one of the foundations of the heavy metal genre.  He was known for his appearance (including his friendly mutton chops), his distinctive gravelly voice and distinctive bass playing style.  Alongside his music career, he also had many minor roles in film and television.  In 1968 he joined the psychedelic rock band Sam Gopal under the name Ian Willis and recorded the album Escalator released in 1969.  (More from Wikipedia)

Sam Gopal formed a new line-up known simply as Sam Gopal that included as vocalist and guitarist Ian Willis, better known as Lemmy; this reorganized band released one album, Escalator in 1968.  Lemmy later played bass guitar for Hawkwind and, in 1975, founded the pounding British heavy metal band called Motörhead
