Joan Jett

Greatly Appreciated

JOAN JETT

Joan Jett  (born Joan Marie Larkin; September 22, 1958) is an American rock guitarist, singer, songwriter, producer and occasional actress, best known for her work with Joan Jett & the Blackhearts, preceded by success with The Runaways, including their hit song “Cherry Bomb”.  The Blackhearts’ record “I Love Rock ’n’ Roll”, was No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 from March 20 to May 1, 1982.  Their other popular recordings include “Crimson and Clover”, “I Hate Myself for Loving You”, “Do You Wanna Touch Me”, “Light of Day”, “Love Is All Around”, and “Bad Reputation”.  She has three albums that have been certified Platinum or Gold, and has been a feminist icon throughout her career.  She is considered by the Toronto Sun as the Queen of Rock ’n’ Roll.  She is also known as the Godmother of Punk.  In 2015, she was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.  (More from Wikipedia)

As mentioned, Kim Fowley is best known as the man who brought together the early all-female rock band the Runaways.  In 1974 or 1975, he placed an ad in the fanzine Who Put the Bomp looking for women who wanted to start an all-female rock band.  He got zero responses; but eventually, drummer Sandy West and rhythm guitarist Joan Jett introduced themselves to Fowley, and the band was in place by late 1975.  As Fowley recalls (from Wikipedia):  “I didn’t put the Runaways together; I had an idea, they had ideas, we all met, there was combustion; and out of five different versions of that group came the five girls who were the ones that people liked.”

The bandmembers in the Runaways were all young girls when the band was formed – much as “runaways” are in real life – and several went on to successful musical careers, among them Joan JettMicki Steele (later in the Bangles), and heavy metal chanteuse Lita Ford

Two of the bandmembers were also featured in major motion pictures; Cherie Currie appeared in the 1980 film Foxes and also (with Vicki Blue) in the 1984 cult classic This Is Spinal Tap

I wrote about the Runaways in some detail about a year ago, so I won’t say too much more about them now.  But I will mention this.  I have previously noted that their first album, The Runaways listed the bandmembers’ ages on the back cover.  For the record, they are a little older than I had remembered (or at least they were by the time the album was released):  Joan Jett (16), Sandy West (16), Cherie Currie (16), Jackie Fox (16), and Lita Ford (17).

These Are the Days by Certain General was produced by Genya Ravan, the former lead singer of perhaps the very first all-female rock band Goldie and the Gingerbreads.  She was also in the band Ten Wheel Drive and has released several solo albums; I have Urban Desire (1978) myself.  Among her other production credits are the Dead Boys’ first studio album, Young, Loud and Snotty (1977).  That’s two important punk rock albums that I know of which were produced by women, the other being the 1979 album by the Germs(GI), which was produced by Joan Jett (a veteran of another all-female band the Runaways).

Lightening the mood some, Betty Blowtorch is an all-woman punk rock band that is more like this month’s UARB than anyone I have talked about so far. Allmusic described the band like this: “Strutting with the guts of Joan Jett and harsh vocals of L7, this hard rock four-piece is truly individualistic and unafraid to be disruptive. Bianca Butthole (bass/vocals), Sharon Needles (guitar), Blare N. Bitch (guitar), and Judy Molish (drums) follow Hollywood’s heavy metal/glam rock scene with a passion for sexed-up anthems of fantasy, and have been honing their nasty rock ways since the late ’90s.”
