CHELSEA MORNING
“Chelsea Morning” is a song written and composed by Joni Mitchell and recorded for the singer’s second album, Clouds, which she released in 1969. Prior to its coming out on the Mitchell album, the song had been issued as a single by Judy Collins earlier in the year, and as a track on the debut album by Fairport Convention in 1968. I have written about Judy Collins before; she is one of my favorite pure folk singers. President Bill Clinton and Hillary Rodham Clinton named their only daughter, Chelsea Clinton, after Collins’ recording of the Joni Mitchell song “Chelsea Morning”. (Interestingly, “Chelsea” and “Clinton” are adjoining sections on the West Side of Manhattan, just above Greenwich Village; Clinton is kind of a made-up name for the area that is also known as Hell’s Kitchen). Judy Collins had her first hit with another of Joni’s songs, “Both Sides Now”.
