Dave Edmunds

DAVE EDMUNDS

Dave Edmunds  (born 15 April 1944) is a Welsh singer, guitarist and record producer.  Although he is mainly associated with pub rock and new wave, and had many hits in the 1970’s and early 1980’s, his natural leaning has always been towards 1950’s style rock and roll.  (More from Wikipedia)

Dion DiMucci was one of the leading rock and rollers of the late 1950’s and early 1960’s, and his work still sounds great to me to this day.

After a long career in the 1950’s and 1960’s, and a period of Christian contemporary recordings, Dion was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and released a great comeback album called Yo Frankie in 1989.  The sticker on the cover proclaims:  “The man who invented the rock & roll attitude . . . has now perfected it”.  Produced by Dave Edmunds, the album features numerous guest appearances:  Paul SimonLou Reedk.d. langPatty Smythand Bryan Adams.  Reed’s speech at the induction ceremony is also included on the sleeve.

Most of the credits on unfamiliar albums are going to be unfamiliar names as well, but every now and then, you will spot a famous person.  Look for the record producer for instance; depending upon your own personal tastes, if John Doe (of X) or Todd Rundgren or Dave Edmunds is involved, and you are a fan, that would increase the chances that you would like the album.

One real treat on the Pebbles, Volume 4 LP is an early number by Dave Edmunds (who lives far from California), called “London’s a Lonely Town” (“. . . when you’re the only surfer boy around” that is preceded by the line, “My woodie’s outside . . . covered with snow”).

Before releasing his monster hit album in 1971 called Bat out of HellMeat Loaf was in a duo called Stoney & Meatloaf that was signed by Motown the year before.  Others include Crystal Mansion (a white psychedelic/R&B band that is a future UARB), Toe Fat (a British band that included two future members of Uriah Heep), Love Sculpture (a Welsh blues-rock band that was led by Dave Edmunds), and a Dutch band called the Cats
