Kathleen Hanna

KATHLEEN HANNA

Kathleen Hanna  (born November 12, 1968) is an American musician, feminist activist, and punk zine writer.  In the early-to mid-1990s, she was the lead singer of feminist punk band Bikini Kill, before fronting Le Tigre in the late 1990s and early 2000s.  In 1998, Hanna released a lo-fi solo album under the name Julie Ruin and since 2010 has been working on a project called The Julie Ruin.  A documentary film about Hanna was released in 2013 by director Sini Anderson, titled The Punk Singer, detailing Hanna’s life and career, as well as revealing her years-long battle with Lyme disease.  Hanna is married to Adam Horovitz of the Beastie Boys.  (More from Wikipedia)

In the late 1980’s, three students at the liberal Evergreen College in OlympiaKathleen Hanna, Tobi Vail and Kathi Wilcox began publishing a feminist fanzine called Bikini Kill.  Guitarist Billy Boredom was recruited to buttress the band that they formed of the same name, Bikini Kill; as you might imagine, his presence in the line-up is under-stated.

Opposition to the unfair imprisonment of two women in Pussy Riot became a cause célèbre of many Western celebrities plus musicians from every genre imaginable:  Bryan AdamsBeastie Boysthe Black Keys, John CalePeter GabrielGreen Day, Nina Hagen, Kathleen Hanna, Paul McCartney, MobyYoko OnoPet Shop BoysRed Hot Chili Peppers, Patti Smith, StingPete Townshend, etc.  Pussy Riot was featured on 60 Minutes as well.

For their part, the bandmembers in Pussy Riot that were not in prison distanced themselves from all of this attention and were quoted as saying:  “We’re flattered, of course, that Madonna and Björk have offered to perform with us.  But the only performances we’ll participate in are illegal ones.  We refuse to perform as part of the capitalist system, at concerts where they sell tickets.”
