SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE (SNL)

Saturday Night Live  (abbreviated as SNL) is an American late-night live television sketch comedy and variety show created by Lorne Michaels and developed by Dick Ebersol.  The show’s comedy sketches, which parody contemporary culture and politics, are performed by a large and varying cast of repertory and newer cast members.  Many of SNL‍ ’ s cast found national stardom while appearing on the show, and achieved success in film and television.  SNL has aired 787 episodes since its debut, and concluded its fortieth season on May 16, 2015, making it one of the longest-running network television programs in the United States.  (More from Wikipedia)

In one of the Kinks’ most popular recordings, their 1970 hit “Lola”, the singer doesn’t quite lay it all on the line with the final words:  It is actually Lola who is glad that the singer is a man – s/he remains as mysterious as the androgynous Saturday Night Live character “Pat” (played by Julia Sweeney) whose romantic companion is “Chris” (originally played by Dana Carvey).

Tracy Chapman is from Cleveland, Ohio and was given a ukulele by her mother once she noticed her talent at a young age; she was writing songs by the age of 8.  Tracy Chapman’s biggest hit song, “Give Me One Reason” wasn’t released until 1995, though it had been part of her concert repertoire for many years, including a performance on Saturday Night Live in December 1989.
