People!

PEOPLE!

People!  was a one-hit wonder rock band that was formed in San Jose, California in 1965.  Their greatest chart success came with their summer hit single “I Love You”.  The song, written by The Zombies bass guitarist Chris White, rose to number one in Japan (twice), Israel, Australia, Italy, South Africa, and the Philippines, and peaked at No. 14 on the Billboard Hot 100 in June 1968.  On October 19, 2007, People! was inducted into the San Jose Rocks Hall of Fame.  After People! broke up, Larry Norman became one of the pioneers of Christian rock music.  (More from Wikipedia)

Originally “Jesus music” or “Jesus rock” was not recorded but only sung among people at a gathering.  Wikipedia mentions Larry Norman as a pioneer of CCM with his 1969 debut solo album Upon this Rock.  Norman had previously been the lead singer and chief songwriter for a band called People! who had a 1968 hit with the Zombies song “I Love You”.  A second album listed by Wikipedia is the 1970 release, Mylon – We Believe by Mylon LeFevre and Broken HeartJoe South appears as a guest musician.
