Only last year did I discover that the Premiers were a Chicano band; there was a show on PBS that explained how this band and so many other Latin bands had been chased off the charts by the British Invasion

More recently, Sister Rosetta Tharpe was featured in the opening program on the 2013 season of the PBS series American Masters

Sadly, Rosemary Clooney is mostly remembered today not so much for her formidable powers as a performer, but rather for the members of her extended family – and also for the long-running PBS series This Old House that was named after her 1954 hit song, This Ole House”.

As an experiment, Reuben Ortiz decided to see how the Coronados and the Real Americans would sound if their music were combined.  Ginger Ortiz recalled:  “There was a kind of realism to this music.  It was a nice contrast to what we’re always supplying as the Coronados:  those dreams that our audiences want.”

The result of this merger of the two bands is Silverbird.  Their career was launched on May 2, 1971 on one of the Fanfare programs on National Educational Television (NET), a precursor to Public Broadcasting Service (PBS).

I remember a PBS special that ran many years ago that told the remarkable story behind this one song, Amazing Grace
