The Police – Ghost in the Machine (1981):  The Police is one of the more sophisticated rock bands of the punk/new wave era; their reggae-inflected sound with an underlying punk sensibility and a willingness to incorporate a host of musical influences was a winning combination in the late 1970’s and into the 1980’s.  By 1983, the Police was the most popular rock band in the world, though they would break up at the height of their fame in 1984 due to internal tensions.  Ghost in the Machine is the fourth album by the Police and includes one of their most enjoyable hits, “Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic”, a #1 hit in their home country and #3 in the U.S.  Ghost in the Machine topped the U.K. album charts and made it to #2 in the U.S.  The album includes a wide variety of moods and influences, as illustrated by the other three singles released in this country:  “Spirits in the Material World”, “Invisible Sun”, and “Secret Journey”.  Other standout tracks include “Demolition Man” and “Rehumanize Yourself”.  In 2003, the Police was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.  Ghost in the Machine and three of the four other studio albums by the Police appear on Rolling Stone magazine’s list of the “500 Greatest Albums of All Time”.
