FM movie soundtrack album cover

FM / The Original Movie Soundtrack (Various Artists) (1978):  FM celebrated the world of rock radio by dramatizing conflicts among the DJ’s and management at a fictitious radio station called Q-SKY and their rivalry with another L.A. radio station.  The storyline is similar to that of the long-running television show WKRP in Cincinnati, but that show was already in development when FM went into theatres.  The film performed poorly at the box office, but FM / The Original Movie Soundtrack album sold a million copies.  The title song “FM (No Static at All)” was a sizable hit for Steely Dan, while the other songs on this double-album provide an overview of established 1970’s rock classics that are played regularly on the radio to this day.  Artists represented on the album include the Eagles, Boston, Tom Petty, Queen, Foreigner, Billy Joel, and Bob Seger.  Two of the songs were performed live by Linda Ronstadt in the concert that is the focal point of the film, “Poor, Poor Pitiful Me” and the Rolling Stones song “Tumbling Dice”.
