Clarence ‘Gatemouth’ Brown – The Original Peacock Recordings (1983):  This wide-ranging Texas multi-instrumentalist is best known for his blues guitar but ventured into nearly all forms of roots music over the course of his long career.  This album combines 12 recordings that Clarence ‘Gatemouth’ Brown made for Peacock Records during the 1950’s, encompassing blistering instrumentals like “Okey Dokey Stomp” and “Ain’t That Dandy” and full-blown rockers like “Dirty Work at the Crossroads” and “That’s Your Daddy Yaddy Yo”.  Mostly Brown’s fiery guitar is on display here, but “Gate’s Salty Blues” includes a harmonica solo; and the blues-style violin that was always present in his concerts finally shows up on one of his last sides for Peacock, “Just Before Dawn”.  Clarence ‘Gatemouth’ Brown and ace guitarist Roy Clark made an album together called Makin’ Music in 1979, and Brown periodically appeared on the country variety show Hee Haw that Clark co-hosted for decades.
