JUDY’S TURN TO CRY
“Judy’s Turn to Cry” is a song written by Beverly Ross (who also co-wrote Roy Orbison’s “Candy Man”) and Edna Lewis that was originally released by Lesley Gore in 1963. The song was produced by Quincy Jones, who also produced Gore’s prior hit “It’s My Party”. It was released on Gore’s first album I’ll Cry If I Want To and also as a single which reached #5 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and #10 on the Billboard R&B singles chart. Lesley Gore’s first album, I’ll Cry If I Want To – the second line in her #1 hit song “It’s My Party” – collects numerous songs about crying, including her own answer song, “Judy’s Turn to Cry”, plus competent covers of pop songs of the day like “Misty” and “Cry Me a River” that most early-1960’s albums are saddled with.
