LISA LOEB

Lisa Loeb  (born March 11, 1968) is an American singer-songwriter and actress.  She launched her career in 1994 with the song “Stay (I Missed You)”, which was included in the film Reality Bites.  She was the first artist to have a number one single in the United States while not signed to a recording contract.  Her five studio CD’s include her major label debut, the gold-selling Tails, and its follow-up, the Grammy-nominated, gold-selling Firecracker.  (More from Wikipedia)

What I remember most fondly about the 1990’s is the bumper crop of fine female singer-songwriters and rockers:  Joan Osborne, Fiona AppleLisa LoebShawn ColvinTracy Chapman, JewelPaula Cole, and just too many more to name.  There was even a series of three music festivals beginning in 1997 that were spearheaded by Sarah McLachlan, called Lilith Fair.  But the growing feeling that rock music was beginning to get scarce was only enhanced when I picked up the nearly rock-less two-disc CD, Lilith Fair: A Celebration of Women in Music in 1998

Nearly all rock bands start out as local bands; hardly any musicians just burst on the scene out of the blue.  There are music scouts everywhere (amateur and professional), and anyone with any talent at all is usually under contract before any records come out.  Lisa Loeb is still the only recording artist to have a #1 song, “Stay (I Missed You)” (1994) before being signed to a recording contract; the song was part of the soundtrack for the film Reality Bites.  She is a major talent, and I have her first three albums:  Tails (actually by Lisa Loeb & Nine Stories), Firecracker and Cake and Pie.

Since I am down to a quarterly schedule rather than a monthly schedule, my annual list is a lot shorter, so I will try listing all of the people that I have discussed in some depth rather than just the Under Appreciated Rock Band and the Story of the Month. They are all punk rock bands of one kind or another this year (2015-2016), and the most recent post includes my overview of the early rap/hip hop scene that an old friend, George Konstantinow challenged me to write – probably so long ago that he might have forgotten.
