KERPLUNK

Kerplunk!  is the second studio album by American punk rock band Green Day, released on December 17, 1991 by Lookout! Records.  Kerplunk was Green Day’s last independent release  and was also the first album to feature Tré Cool on drums.  Green Day developed a fan base on the east coast, behind the determined grass root efforts of lead singer, Billie Joe Armstrong.  The opportunity paid off as album sales reached over 50,000 copies.  Along with the successful live shows, major labels took notice of Kerplunk’s phenomenal popularity, and Green Day eventually signed with Reprise Records.  Kerplunk originally included only 12 tracks, but the versions released on CD and cassette also include the 4 tracks from the Sweet Children EP, including a cover of The Who’s “My Generation”.  As of November 2013, Kerplunk has sold more than 4,000,000 copies worldwide, going on to be among the best selling independently released albums of all time.  (More from Wikipedia)

In early 1990, the label released Green Day’s first full album, 39/Smooth, with two other EP’s following later in the year, Slappy and Sweet Children; the latter disc features early recordings by Sweet Children for another label, Skene! Records. The following year, Lookout! Records combined the band’s previous releases (except Sweet Children) as 1,039/Smoothed Out Slappy Hours. Later that year saw the release of Green Day’s second album, Kerplunk, which sold 50,000 copies.
