In the Heights

IN THE HEIGHTS

In the Heights  is a musical with music and lyrics by Lin-Manuel Miranda and a book by Quiara Alegría Hudes.  The story is set over the course of three days, involving characters in the largely Hispanic-American neighborhood of Washington Heights in New York City.  The show opened in a Broadway production in March 2008.  This production was nominated for thirteen Tony Awards, winning four, including Best Musical.  It won a Grammy Award for Best Musical Show Album.  (More from Wikipedia)

Fresh from his success with his earlier musical In the Heights (set in the mostly Dominican-American communities in the Washington Heights section of Upper Manhattan), Lin-Manuel Miranda began reading the 2004 biography Alexander Hamilton by Ron Chernow.  Once he saw echoes of his own life there, he started envisioning the idea of Alexander Hamilton’s story as a Broadway musical.
