Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers  is an American rock band from Gainesville, Florida.  They were on the forefront of the heartland rock movement, alongside artists such as Bruce Springsteen and Bob Seger, which arose in the late 1970’s and 1980’s.  Petty and the Heartbreakers are known for hit singles such as “American Girl”, “Breakdown”, “The Waiting”, “Learning to Fly”, “Refugee”, and “Mary Jane’s Last Dance”.  Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers have sold more than 80 million records worldwide, making them one of the world’s best-selling bands of all time.  (More from Wikipedia)
 
 
One of the original members of Skin and Code Blue, drummer Randall Marsh was in a band in 1970 with a then 17-year-old Tom Petty called Mudcrutch that was the direct forerunner to Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers.  Marsh also took part in a reunion of Mudcrutch that released an acclaimed album in 2007 called Mudcrutch

One measure of their success is that the Runaways were the headliners in their early concerts, with opening acts that included major bands like Cheap TrickTom Petty and the Heartbreakers and Van Halen.
