Pet Shop Boys

PET SHOP BOYS

Pet Shop Boys  are a British electronic pop duo, formed in London in 1981 and consisting of Neil Tennant (main vocals, keyboards, occasional guitar) and Chris Lowe (keyboards, occasional vocals).  Pet Shop Boys have sold more than 50 million records worldwide, and are listed as the most successful duo in UK music history by The Guinness Book of Records.  They have had four UK number ones:  “West End Girls” (also number one on the US Billboard Hot 100), “It’s a Sin”, an acclaimed cover of “Always on My Mind”, and “Heart”.  At the 2009 Brit Awards, Pet Shop Boys received an award for Outstanding Contribution to Music.  (More from Wikipedia)

Very few 12-inch singles have collector’s item values; about the only ones that I know of are some of the earliest Pet Shop Boys singles, where their big hit “West End Girls” is shown as the “B” side.

Opposition to the unfair imprisonment of two women in Pussy Riot became a cause célèbre of many Western celebrities plus musicians from every genre imaginable:  Bryan AdamsBeastie Boysthe Black Keys, John CalePeter GabrielGreen Day, Nina Hagen, Kathleen Hanna, Paul McCartney, MobyYoko OnoPet Shop BoysRed Hot Chili Peppers, Patti Smith, StingPete Townshend, etc.  Pussy Riot was featured on 60 Minutes as well.

For their part, the bandmembers in Pussy Riot that were not in prison distanced themselves from all of this attention and were quoted as saying:  “We’re flattered, of course, that Madonna and Björk have offered to perform with us.  But the only performances we’ll participate in are illegal ones.  We refuse to perform as part of the capitalist system, at concerts where they sell tickets.”

Black Russian had some assistance with the lyrics, perhaps because English is not their native language; they hardly spoke the language at all at the time that they defected.  Lyricists who lent a hand include Allee Willis, who co-wrote the lyrics for their beautiful first single Leave Me Now.  Willis has had a long career as a writer, songwriter, set designer, and artist.  From Wikipedia:  “[Allee Willis] songs have sold over 50,000,000 records, including ‘September’ and ‘Boogie Wonderland’ by Earth, Wind and Fire, ‘Neutron Dance’ by the Pointer Sisters, ‘What Have I Done to Deserve This?’ by Pet Shop Boys with Dusty Springfield, and ‘Lead Me On’ by Maxine Nightingale.  Willis has collaborated with hundreds of leading artists and composers from all fields of music, including Bob DylanPatti LaBelleJames BrownHerbie HancockDeniece Williams, and Motown legend Lamont Dozier.”
