Fleetwood Mac

Greatly Appreciated

FLEETWOOD MAC

Fleetwood Mac  are a British-American rock band formed in July 1967, in London.  The band have sold more than 100 million records worldwide, making them one of the best-selling bands of all time.  The two most successful periods for the band were during the late 1960s British blues boom, when they were led by guitarist Peter Green and achieved a UK number one with “Albatross”; and from 1975 to 1987, as a more pop-oriented act, featuring Christine McVie, Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks.  Fleetwood Mac’s second album after the incorporation of Buckingham and Nicks, 1977’s Rumours, has sold over 40 million copies worldwide, making it the eighth-highest-selling album of all time.  (More from Wikipedia)

To the surprise of the folks at Record Collector, numerous Klubs fans responded to the mention of the band; they were even contacted by one of the original bandmembers, Norris “Noz” Easterbrook.  Within months, Tenth Planet Records rushed a vinyl-only album called Midnight Love Cycle to market; the 1,000 discs in the pressing were nearly sold out when Record Collector justly named the record “Album of the Year” for 1999, ahead of releases that year of albums by much better known bands like Fleetwood Mac and Small Faces.

The backing band for Chimera included Bob Weston on guitar; he was a prominent member of Fleetwood Mac for about a year in 1972 and 1973.  Roy O’Temro (or Roy Temro) was the drummer; other bandmembers on some of the songs are Nick South (bass guitar) and Ian Milne (keyboards).  Orchestral arrangements were by Wil Malone

John Mayall’s band was a revolving door of famous British musicians; but even more remarkably, bandmembers who left John Mayall & the Bluesbreakers often helped form other rock bands.  For instance, shortly after Eric Clapton left for good, John Mayall & the Bluesbreakers consisted of John Mayall plus three of the founding members of Fleetwood Mac:  Peter GreenJohn McVie, and Mick Fleetwood.

The bandmembers in the Chantays were high school friends in Orange County, California; they were Bob SpickardBrian CarmanBob Welch (not the Bob Welch who joined Fleetwood Mac), Warren Waters and Rob Marshall.  Spickard and Carman co-wrote Pipeline, and it made #4 on the Billboard Hot 100 in May 1963 and #16 on the UK charts.

People bought more albums in the 1970’s than at any time before or since. For what it’s worth, 6 of the 10 biggest selling albums of all time were released during the 1970’s – in order, they are The Dark Side of the Moon by Pink Floyd; Bat out of Hell by Meat Loaf; Their Greatest Hits (1971–1975) by the Eagles; the Saturday Night Fever Soundtrack (featuring the Bee Gees and others); Rumours by Fleetwood Mac; and Led Zeppelin IV by Led Zeppelin. However you might feel about these chestnuts, it is hard to imagine a more varied group of albums. Thriller by Michael Jackson (1983) remains Number One, but I was certainly surprised to see Back in Black (1980) by AC/DC in second place.
