CANTOR
A cantor is a person who leads people in singing, or sometimes in prayer. In Judaism, a cantor is one who sings and leads people in prayer in a Jewish religious service, and may be called hazzan. “Cantor” is used as a translation of equivalent terms in other languages, such as for the leader of singing on a traditional Kerala snake boat, a Chundan Vallam. A post by Jewish Business News also says of Randy California of Spirit: “In his book Stars of David: Rock ’n’ Roll’s Jewish Stories, author Scott R. Benarde quotes [his mother Bernice] Pearle saying, ‘I always felt Randy [California]’s solos sounded like what I remember from Temple. I told him that sometimes his guitar sounded like a cantor in Synagogue.’”
