Be-Bop Deluxe

BE-BOP DELUXE

Be-Bop Deluxe  were an English progressive rock band who achieved critical acclaim and moderate commercial success during the mid to late 1970’s.  The band’s sound emerged as a mixture of glam rock, prog rock and straightforward rock and roll.  Science fiction imagery was common in Bill Nelson’s lyrics, along with the more traditional themes of love and the human condition (albeit often hidden beneath Nelson’s quirky lyrical and musical metaphors).  (More from Wikipedia)

While in my 20’s (in the late 1970’s), I got to know three brothers in Raleigh; and the youngest of them was really into music.  Unlike the last time, when I was still in high school, I was a little more grown up; I still didn’t really take notes, but I would often buy records by some of these bands.  The bands that he introduced me to include the Pink Fairies and Hawkwind, still two of my all-time favorite groups; Styx; Be-Bop Deluxe; and Kraftwerk.

Much as Homer had often done, Ultra was conceived as a touring band that would open for national acts, rather than playing in small clubs, and this was in keeping with their big sound.  Galen Niles has mentioned as examples that they opened for Be-Bop Deluxe and Pat Travers.
