The Angry Samoans

THE ANGRY SAMOANS

The Angry Samoans  are an American punk rock band from the first wave of American punk, formed in August 1978 in Los Angeles, California by early 1970s rock writer “Metal” Mike Saunders, his sibling lead guitarist Bonze Blayk, and Gregg Turner (another rock writer, for Creem from the late 1970s through the mid-1980s), along with original recruits Todd Homer (bass) and Bill Vockeroth (drums).  (More from Wikipedia)

Punk stalwart Jeff Dahl – whose resumé includes a stint in the Angry Samoans and recordings with Cheetah Chrome of the Dead Boys and Rikk Agnew of the Adolescents – had worked with both the Peeps and Tempe Tramps in the past.  Jeff Dahl was instrumental in getting Les Hell on Heels signed by Greg Shaw of Bomp! Records – the CD was released shortly before Shaw’s death in 2004 – and Dahl also wrote one of the songs on the CD, “Ain’t So Cool”.  Greg Shaw was quoted as saying of Les Hell on Heels:  “I feel the same way that Phil Spector must have felt when he first saw the Ronettes.”

Probably the best known of the women’s music artists is Holly Near, although she is even more familiar as a left-wing political activist.  In the late 1960’s and early 1970’sHolly Near appeared in several films, including Slaughterhouse Five and The Todd Killings, as well as television shows like All in the FamilyThe Mod Squad and The Partridge Family.

By the way, there might be a few out there who remember a song by the controversial punk rock band the Angry Samoans called “The Todd Killings”; if I remember right, they performed the song on New Wave Theatre one night.
