Edith Piaf – The Best of Edith Piaf (1965):  With the exception of opera (typically sung in Italian), English-speaking audiences almost completely ignore music that is not sung in English, particularly in the United States.  Edith Piaf – also known as La Môme Piaf (“the little sparrow”) – is an exception; and she became one of the most celebrated performers of the 20th Century, recording mostly in the 1940’s through the early 1960’s.  Her best-known songs are “La Vie en Rose” (“Life in Pink”) and “Non, je ne Regrette Rien” (“No, I do not Regret Anything”).  When “La Vie en Rose” was released in France in 1946, the song was such a sensation that seven different French-language versions of “La Vie en Rose” made the Billboard charts in the U.S., as performed by Tony Martin, Paul Weston, Bing Crosby, Ralph Flanagan, Victor Young, Dean Martin, and Louis Armstrong.  I have a copy of the Louis Armstrong recording of “La Vie en Rose” on the soundtrack album of the 1995 Meg Ryan/Kevin Kline film French Kiss, and it really is a treat.  The Best of Edith Piaf presents 12 Edith Piaf songs that appear to be the original recordings.
