Ocean Drive (Various Artists) (1981): Ocean Drive Beach was the name of the hottest South Carolina beach town in the 1950’s and 1960’s; it is now a part of North Myrtle Beach. This is another nice collection of beach music songs, similar to Beach Beat Classics, Volume II (1981) that I gave you earlier. There are a lot of Ocean Drive albums out there, and many have nothing to do with beach music. Besides this three-album set called Ocean Drive, there is also a two-album set with the same cover, the same name and the same songs, which came out in the same year. Unlike the two-album version, the three-album edition does not mention Beach Beat Records, which commissioned the albums, but only Warner Special Products Records. The 30 songs are all by different artists; and unlike most beach music albums, several Motown classics are included: “My Girl” by the Temptations, “Stubborn Kind of Fellow” by Marvin Gaye (not included on Every Great Motown Hit of Marvin Gaye), “Baby I Need Your Loving” by the Four Tops, and others. Most of the two-album and three-album sets in my collection went through Hurricane Katrina relatively unscathed, but not this one; some of the songs are probably not going to play.
