Nilsson – The Point! (1971):  Equally adept at recording his own songs and interpreting songs written by others, Harry Nilsson normally uses only his surname professionally.  Nilsson is a maverick of the first order and has written and recorded an incredibly wide variety of material over the years, scattering a number of major hit songs in the process, such as the #1 hit “Without You” and “Everybody’s Talkin’ ” (from the soundtrack of the 1969 film Midnight Cowboy).  His songs were often covered by other artists as well, such as Three Dog Night’s first Top Ten hit “One” and “Without Her” that showed up on the first Blood, Sweat and Tears album, Child Is Father to the Man (1968).  The Point! is yet another left turn in Nilsson’s career and is the acclaimed soundtrack for a narrated fable, with portions of the story interspersed with songs.  An animated version of the story called The Point aired in 1971 and was the first animated feature ever to be broadcast in prime time on U.S. television, but the album The Point! came first.  The album includes the hit song “Me and My Arrow” that reached #3 on the Billboard Adult Contemporary chart, illustrating the appeal of the story and the album to children and grownups alike.
