Motörhead – Ace of Spades (1980):  Motörhead was founded in June 1975 by Lemmy Kilmister, who usually goes by just Lemmy.  Lemmy had been in Hawkwind and split with them in 1975, naming his new band after the last song that he wrote for Hawkwind, “Motorhead” (without the umlaut).  Motörhead has an overwhelmingly aggressive guitar-driven sound that is played at breakneck speed.  They were definitely ahead of their time, arriving before the new wave of British heavy metal that energized the heavy metal scene, and also influencing the thrash metal and speed metal genres.  Lemmy, however, always described their music as rock and roll and has said that Motörhead has more in common with punk rock, though with their own special sound.  Ace of Spades is their fourth studio album, with “Ace of Spades” being by far the best-known song by Motörhead.  It is the first Motörhead album to be released in America, although this particular album is the German edition.  Ace of Spades is also Motörhead’s most successful album, becoming a Gold record and peaking at #4 on the U.K. music charts.  In their 2020 listing, Ace of Spades was ranked #408 on Rolling Stone magazine’s “500 Greatest Albums of All Time”.
