Colors of the Day album cover

Judy Collins – Colors of the Day / The Best of Judy Collins (1972):  First developing her sound in the folk revival movement of the early 1960’s, Judy Collins veered into many other forms of music over the decades since, as was true of other folk artists like Bob Dylan and Joan Baez.  While she is a gifted songwriter, Collins is better known as an interpretive singer unmatched for selecting excellent material.  While not including more recent hits like the Stephen Sondheim showtune “Send in the Clowns” (from 1975), Colors of the Day is a first-rate introduction to her work and includes her Grammy-winning cover of Joni Mitchell’s “Both Sides, Now”, her a cappella rendition of “Amazing Grace”, “Who Knows Where the Time Goes?” (written by Sandy Denny of Fairhope Convention), the Beatles song “In My Life”, Leonard Cohen’s “Suzanne”, “Farewell to Tarwathie” (where Judy Collins is accompanied by the songs of humpback whales), and three of her own songs:  “Since You Asked”, “My Father”, and “Albatross”.
