Dr. John the Night Tripper – Gris-Gris (1968):  The last few years of the 1960’s were a bold era for music, and 1968 in particular stands out.  The man born Mac Rebennack in New Orleans was yet another session musician in the group known as the Wrecking Crew, along with Glen Campbell, Leon Russell and others.  He is mostly known to us as Dr. John and had a Top Ten hit song in 1973 with “Right Place, Right Time”.  He used the monikers Dr. John Creaux and Dr. John the Night Tripper early on, with other stage names as well here and there.  Gris-Gris is his first album and is a potent mix of R&B, psychedelic rock, blues, voodoo chants, and who knows what else.  For decades, Dr. John was a fixture in New Orleans music.  He won six Grammy Awards and has been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
