Blues at Newport Vol. 2 album cover

The Blues at Newport 1964, Part 2 (Various Artists) (1965):  The Blues at Newport 1964, Part 2 left more of an impression on me than did The Blues at Newport 1964, Part 1, though both feature fine blues music.  Artists on this album are Mississippi John Hurt, Skip James, Rev. Robert Wilkins, Elizabeth Cotten, and Willie Doss.  A cover of Wilkins’ “The Prodigal Son” (based on Jesus’s parable), which is faithful to the version of “The Prodigal Son” given on this album, was included on Beggars Banquet, one of my very favorite Rolling Stones albums.  Elizabeth Cotten (misspelled on the album as “Elizabeth Cotton”) wrote “Freight Train” when she was just 12 years old.  Pete Seeger’s family arranged to have her record an album in 1957 called Folksongs and Instrumentals; “Freight Train” became a Top 5 hit in the U.K.
