In the Heat of the Night album cover

Pat Benatar – In the Heat of the Night (1979):  One of the decidedly new aspects of new wave music was the presence of strong female vocalists and woman-fronted rock bands, along with more than a few all-female rock bands.  Pat Benatar was one of the first to arrive on the scene and one of the most durable on the charts.  Her powerful, classically trained voice was ideal for her brand of hard rockPat Benatar’s musical partner from the beginning has been guitarist Neil Giraldo (they married in 1982); they now have co-billing in recent concert appearances.  Giraldo contributes one song on her debut album In the Heat of the Night, “We Live for Love”; while Pat Benatar co-writes two other songs.  Three of the songs including the title track “In the Heat of the Night” were provided by the prolific British songwriting team of Nicky Chinn and Mike Chapman.  Also, Pat Benatar covers a John Cougar Mellencamp song “I Need a Lover”; the original version of “I Need a Lover” is taken from his second album which came out the previous year under the name Johnny Cougar, A Biography
