Best of the Beach Boys album cover

The Beach Boys – Best of the Beach Boys (1966):  Released in the summer of 1966, this breezy collection of fun songs about surfing and cars and teenage culture primarily features the original Beach Boys sound, with only “In My Room” and “God Only Knows” (one of Paul McCartney’s favorite songs) being representative of the more sophisticated music that appeared on their album Pet Sounds, also released in 1966.  To some extent, Pet Sounds was the Beach Boys’ answer to the Beatles album Rubber Soul; while Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band was the Beatles’ answer to Pet Sounds.  Now named Best of the Beach Boys, Volume 1, the similar Best of the Beach Boys, Volume 2 would follow just one year later.
