ZAKARY THAKS

The Zakary Thaks  were an American garage band from Corpus Christi, Texas, United states, which formed in the mid-1960's.  The band developed out of the Marauders, a teen group which included Chris Gerniottis (vocals), Pete Stinson (guitar), and Rex Gregory (bass), and who then became the Riptides, adding lead guitarist John Lopez.  By 1966, they had acquired a new drummer, Stan Moore, and had become the Zakary Thaks – the name being a mutated version of one seen in a magazine.   (More from Wikipedia)

A remarkable reunion and awards ceremony for 1960's and 1970's San Antonio bands is scheduled to take place this Sunday, September 4, 2011.  Besides the Outcasts and Ultra, bands that are scheduled to appear include Bubble Puppy (who had a national hit song called "Hot Smoke and Sassafras" that I haven't heard in ages), Swiss Movement, the Laughing Kind, and Stone Soul Clique, whose members include Chris Gerniottis, formerly of Zakary Thaks.  Should be a great time!

While these preferences would inform Mike Stax's sensibilities as the founder of Ugly Things magazine, also in 1982, they created friction within the Crawdaddys.  Keith Fisher for one hated American garage rock music; after finding a very rare 45 by the Texas garage rock band Zakary Thaks, he threw it across the room at Mike Stax on his 21st birthday and ruined it.  Stax quit the band on the spot after that, though he was planning to leave the Crawdaddys in the summer of 1983 anyway.
