WCPR

WCPR-FM RADIO

WCPR-FM  (97.9 FM) is a radio station licensed to Wiggins, Mississippi, and its transmitter is located in Saucier, Mississippi, on a 466-foot tower at 50,000 watts of power.  WCPR plays all new rock alternative and some active rock from the 1980's and 1990's but mostly new rock.  The station's signal reaches far west to Covington, Louisiana, far east to Mobile, Alabama, and far north as Hattiesburg, Mississippi.  The station started with a country music format and was called WUSD US 98 from 1995 to 1996.  Sometime in 1996 WCPR was born and became the first new rock station in the Mississippi Gulf Coast.  (More from Wikipedia)

It has been a long time since a record grabbed me the way the Invisible Eyes did.  I was reminded of the first time that I heard "Kryptonite" by 3 Doors Down (the most successful rock band from the Mississippi Gulf Coast region) on the local alternative-rock radio station WCPR: I cranked the radio up full blast after I heard the first four or five notes, and I bet I hadn't done that for at least 20 years.  This was long before they got their national label contract, when they were just a local band.  It is a quite a success story actually:  The song was the #1 request at the radio station for 15 weeks.

I still hear the original version of "Kryptonite" on local radio once in a while.

One of our local TV news anchors until recently, Rebecca Powers released a CD about 15 years ago under her maiden name, Rebecca Allen called I Don't Care while she was a DJ at a local radio station, WCPR-FM.  It is quite good, and I still play it once in a while.  She currently performs with a local band called the Myles Sharp Band (Mr. Sharp is a member of the Gulfport City Council).
