UFO Club

UFO CLUB

The UFO Club  was a famous but short-lived UK underground club in London during the 1960s, venue of performances by many of the top bands of the day.  (More from Wikipedia)

Rudolf Schenker’s younger brother Michael Schenker was a member of a British hard rock band called UFO during their most successful period in the mid-1970’s.  The band was named after the famed UFO Club (pronounced “you foe” or “oo foe”) in London that had been the epicenter for British psychedelic and underground rock in the 1960’sMichael had periodically performed with his brother’s band Scorpions and formed the Michael Schenker Group in 1979; this band also is active to this day.

On two of his albums, there is a short interview with Mick Farren at the UFO Club, a legendary London scene where some of the earliest psychedelic rock bands like Pink Floyd and Soft Machine held court; it was only open for about a year in 1966-1967.  In the interview, Farren basically states that he is not a Marxist – he is simply stating that the society isn’t working, and that he is trying to create a world where “people can freely enjoy themselves”, but adds that “that is where the trouble started”.

In 1966, two of the bandmembers in the Sons of Fred joined an underground psychedelic rock band called Sam Gopal’s Dream.  Sam Gopal is from Malaysia and plays the tabla, a type of drum that often accompanies the sitar inIndian music.  Bandmembers initially were Sam Gopal (tabla), Mick Hutchinson (guitar), and Pete Sears (bass guitar); a little later, Andy Clark was added on organ.

Sam Gopal’s Dream performed at The 14 Hour Technicolor Dream, the benefit concert mentioned earlier for the International Times underground newspaper, and also at the UFO Club.  To date, the recordings made by Sam Gopal’s Dream for Screen Gems Records in 1967 remain unreleased.
