TLC

TLC

TLC  is an American girl group whose original recording line-up consisted of Tionne “T-Boz” Watkins, Lisa “Left Eye” Lopes and Rozonda “Chilli” Thomas.  Formed in Atlanta, Georgia in 1990, the group was very successful during the 1990s and early 2000s, scoring nine top-ten hits on the Billboard Hot 100, including number-one singles “Creep”, “Waterfalls”, “No Scrubs”, and “Unpretty”.  The group also recorded four multi platinum albums, including CrazySexyCool (1994) which still remains the only album by a female singing group in history to receive diamond certification from the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA).  Having sold over 75 million records worldwide, TLC is the best-selling American girl group of all time.  (More from Wikipedia)

A torrent of girl groups followed, among them Martha and the Vandellasthe Supremes, the Marvelettesthe Shirellesthe Ronettes, and the Orlons.  Bette Midler’s revival of “Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy” in 1973 reminded rock audiences of the Andrews Sisters, who had had the original hit with “Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy” during World War II.  More recently, the Spice GirlsTLC and Destiny’s Child (whence came Beyoncé) continued the tradition.

Allmusic sends out a weekly email called “New Release Newsletter” listing dozens of new albums, which I have gotten for years; in nearly every one, there are bands and artists represented that I know something about. In the most recent one (dated June 30, 2017), there are new albums or re-releases by the Beach Boys, TLC, Stone Sour, Jesse Malin, and Lee Bains III & the Glory Fires. Nor are these the only ones; Allmusic states in the emails: “Here are our editors’ picks for this week’s most noteworthy new releases.”
