SCHOOL OF ROCK

School of Rock  is a 2003 comedy film directed by Richard Linklater, produced by Scott Rudin, and written by Mike White.  The film stars Jack Black, who plays struggling rock singer and guitarist Dewey Finn; he is kicked out of his band and subsequently disguises himself as a substitute teacher at a prestigious prep school.  After witnessing the musical talent in his students in their music class, Dewey forms a band of fourth-graders to attempt to win the upcoming Battle of the Bands and pay off his rent.  It was the highest grossing music-themed comedy of all time until it was overtaken in 2015 by Pitch Perfect 2.  (More from Wikipedia)

Just because a hip hop musical made this big a splash doesn’t mean that rock musicals have gone away.  Broadway titan Andrew Lloyd Webber returned to his roots with his current show, School of Rock that opened on Broadway four months after Hamilton, on December 6, 2015.  The musical is based on the delightful Jack Black film from 2003School of Rock that follows a washed-up rock musician who conceives the idea of masquerading as a substitute teacher and pressing a group of fourth graders into backing him at the local Battle of the Bands in order to get his career back on track.
