R. Crumb

ROBERT CRUMB (R. CRUMB)

Robert Crumb  (born August 30, 1943) is an American cartoonist and musician who often signs his work R. Crumb.  His work displays a nostalgia for American folk culture of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, and satire of contemporary American culture.  Crumb rose to prominence after the 1968 debut of Zap Comix, the first successful underground comix publication.  Popular creations of his from this era include countercultural characters such as Fritz the Cat and Mr. Natural, and the images from his Keep on Truckin’ strip.  (More from Wikipedia)

Cheap Thrills was a true sensation – as happened so often with the BeatlesBig Brother and the Holding Company staked out territory on this album that other rock artists could only admire; no one tried to follow them.  The front cover art by top “underground comics” artist R. Crumb still looks amazing; almost as well known is the dramatic pose by Janis Joplin on the back cover.
