Pebbles, Volume 1 CD

PEBBLES, VOLUME 1 (CD / AIP)

Pebbles  is a compilation of US underground and garage single record releases from the mid- to late-1960s.  It had a limited original release in 1978 and a more general release in 1979 (where the album was identified simply as Pebbles).  This album is nowadays known as Pebbles, Volume 1.  AIP issued the first volume in the Pebbles series in CD format in 1992.  Although the CD has bonus tracks and a colored cover, the two formats are largely the same album and even have similar catalogue numbers.  (More from Wikipedia)

GONN is another legendary garage rock band; their amazing song “Blackout of Gretely” was slated to be included on the original Nuggets album but was omitted due to its length (4:29 – most garage rock tracks clock in at 3:00 or less).  But Greg Shaw had included this song as a bonus track on the CD reissue on AIP Records of Pebbles, Volume 1 and also put their follow-up single “Doin’ Me In” on the Pebbles, Volume 10 CD

The liner notes by Nigel Strange on Pebbles, Volume 1 (the CD that is) says of Kim Fowley:  “What more can be said about this writer/singer/producer/hustler who’s had his hand in everything from ‘Alley Oop’ by the Hollywood Argyles, to Helen Reddy, to the Dead Boys, to Guns N’ Roses. . . .  This song [The Trip], released at the onset of teenage freakout mania, was something of a sensation in L.A. at the time and was covered by others including Thee Midniters and disc jockey Godfrey.  A real classic.”

The retrospective album that I own by the Tell-Tale HeartsHigh Tide (Big Noses & Pizza Faces) came out in 1994 on Voxx Records, collecting 6 songs from The Tell-Tale Hearts (after being remixed to recapture their original sound); 5 from The “Now” Sound of the Tell-Tale Hearts; the 1986 single mentioned above, Promise” b/w “Too Many Lovers”; 5 demos dating from early 1984; and 3 live performances.  Nine of the songs are previously unreleased.  Among the demos is a particularly welcome version of Crackin’ Up”; “Crackin’ Up” by the Wig is listed on the cover of both the Pebbles, Volume 1 LP and the Pebbles, Volume 1 CD but is not actually included on the album.
