My Ding-a-Ling

MY DING-A-LING

“My Ding-a-Ling”  is a novelty song written and recorded by Dave Bartholomew.  The song is based on the melody of the 19th century folk song “Little Brown Jug”.  It was covered by Chuck Berry in 1972 and became his only number-one Billboard Hot 100 single in the United States.  Later that year, in a longer unedited form, it was included on the album The London Chuck Berry Sessions.  Guitarist Onnie McIntyre and drummer Robbie McIntosh, who later that year went on to form the Average White Band, played on the single along with Nic Potter of Van der Graaf Generator on bass.  (More from Wikipedia)

Chuck Berry has continued recording over the years and scored his only #1 hit with his double-entendre–loaded “My Ding-A-Ling” in 1972

Doug Clark and the Hot Nuts played dance hits of the day interspersed with bawdy songs that included “My Ding-a-Ling” (long before Chuck Berry had his sole #1 hit with “My Ding-a-Ling” in 1972), “Baby Let Me Bang Your Box” (later played at the end of the New York porno cable program, The Robin Byrd Show), “Big Jugs” (a reworking of the Jimmy Dean song “Big John”), “Barnacle Bill the Sailor”, “Two Old Maids”, and “Gay Caballero”.
