THE FOUR ACES OF WESTERN SWING
Bill Haley & His Comets was an American rock and roll band that was founded in 1952 and continued until Haley’s death in 1981. In the mid-1940s, Bill Haley performed with the Down Homers and formed a group called the Four Aces of Western Swing. The group that later became the Comets initially formed as Bill Haley and the Saddlemen c. 1949–1952, and performed mostly country and western songs, though occasionally with a bluesy feel. Bill Haley has told the story of crafting a simulated guitar out of cardboard when he was just a child; his parents then bought him a real guitar. In about 1940, when he was 15, Haley left home to become a professional musician; two years earlier, Bill Haley was already landing paid gigs at $1 a night. Haley got his start in country music and became one of the top cowboy yodelers under the name Silver Yodeling Bill Haley in the 1940’s; he later formed a band called The Four Aces of Western Swing.
