The Donnas

THE DONNAS

The Donnas  are an American all-female rock band from Palo Alto, California.  They draw inspiration from Ramones, The Runaways, AC/DC, Bachman–Turner Overdrive and Kiss.  Rolling Stone has stated that “the Donnas offer a guileless take on adolescent alienation; they traffic in kicks, not catharsis, fun rather than rage”.  MTV has stated that the band offers “a good old-fashioned rock & roll party”.  After gathering a cult following in the punk scene since their 1993 debut, the band achieved major label commercial success in the early 2000’s and afterward as their music mixed punk, metal and classic rock sounds.  (More from Wikipedia)

For people who, unlike me, don’t like really these particular styles of music, every punk-psychedelic band like the Invisible Eyes, every primitive proto-punk band like the Stoogesand every snotty all-girl rock band like Les Hell on Heels is going to sound pretty much the same I suppose.  But it wasn’t like that for me at all for these three albums.  The Invisible Eyes became an instant favorite; the Stooges album, Open Up and Bleed! is the first one in The Iguana Chronicles that really tore my head off; and, for my money, Les Hell on Heels beats the Donnas and the Pandoras at their own game – and I love both of those bands.

Several years back, I picked up a cool album released in 2006 by a Spanish band called Suzy & los Quattro called Ready to Go!; I guess you could call a tribute to Suzi Quatro and the Quatro family.  As with the Ramones and the Donnas – where, respectively, the last name of all of the bandmembers is given as “Ramone”, and the first name of all of the bandmembers is “Donna” – the bandmembers are shown as having the surname “Quattro” with the exception of bandleader and vocalist Suzy Chain
