CHARLES WESLEY

Charles Wesley  (18 December 1707 – 29 March 1788) was an English leader of the Methodist movement, most widely known for writing more than 6,000 hymns.  He was the younger brother of Methodist founder John Wesley and Anglican cleric Samuel Wesley the Younger, and he became the father of musician Samuel Wesley and grandfather of musician Samuel Sebastian Wesley.  Despite their closeness, Charles and John did not always agree on questions relating to their beliefs.  In particular, Charles was strongly opposed to the idea of a breach with the Church of England into which they had been ordained.  (More from Wikipedia)

Christian hymns, particularly Christmas carols that are hundreds of years old still remain popular today, even though modern popular music has been incrementally taking over most church services for decades.  Some songwriters in the Christian church are incredibly prolific; Charles Wesley (1707-1788), one of the co-founders of the Methodist Church is credited with writing more than 6,000 hymns.
